Teddy Rosevelt

On Tuesday,  we watched a documentary on the Theodore Rosevelt and took notes on whether or not he was a progressive.  personally I believe it is hard to judge him as either, because he did a lot of things that could contradict an arguement that he is one or the other.  For example, he broke up trusts that had too much power, but he himself did whatever he pleased an did not ask congress for permission, prompting his critics to believe he was undemocratic and possesed too much power.
Do you think Rosevelt was a progressive? Why or why not?

  1. I think he was a progressive, despite his hunger for power.

  2. I think Roosevelt is progressive because he stood on the public's interest's side. He thinks that the upper class were earning too much and it is very unfair to the lower class. Therefore, he did many actions to fight for the lower class people. He struck the financial district without warning, he broke up the monopoly, he also broke up trust that were too popular. Moreover, he helped the mine workers fight for a higher wage. He also proposed laws to regulate industry, He also carried out the Pure Food and Drug Act and Meat inspection act to protect the consumers. These show that Roosevelt cared a lot about the public/ lower class.

  3. I agree with you that its hard to judge if Roosevelt was a progressive or not because he did things that contradicted what he said. I think that he is neither, I think that he was trying to help in America but somethings that he did didn't come out the way he wanted them to come out because he thought that he was a progressive.

  4. I think Roosevelt did whatever he thought was best for the country, whether it was progressive or not, which the things he did contradicted with the things he said. He might have thought of himself as a progressive and was put in office by them, but I believe he was only a progressive as long as the progressive way followed his way.

  5. I think that Roosevelt was a progressive but he did do some things that were not progressive. For example, he would belittle journalists who tried to expose the bad things in society. He tried to hide these things

  6. Despite his many infamous contradictions, I certainly believe that President Theodore Roosevelt was a progressive. He introduced laws that were able to regulate the workplace and even provided some degree of social welfare. He established the FDA (food and drug association), the first government organization to regulate the quality of food and medicine products produced in factories and additionally passed laws regulating workplace safety and establishing a minimum wage, advocating for regulated conditions in workplaces and the production of the quality of products.
