Flash Back, The War on Drugs

The War on Drugs was a good idea, but flawed. What happened was as the police cracked down on drugs and drug dealers, who were often males. Urban areas were typically short on male influences for children and created a social imbalance. While you might think that how could someone on drugs or that deals them be a positive influence on a child? The truth is not all drug users and dealers are bad people. The lack of role models in the urban cities created this pattern that often the young men turn to the things that got the previous generation of males in jail. Because the older generation was in jail they were not their to guide the younger ones away from crime. I think that taking drugs off the street is a good thing. That being said, holding the people arrested on drug charges for as long as they are is not. There should be some sort of system in place to punish those who broke the law for drugs but also to aid them and provide drug addiction care.

To recap, The War on Drugs was a good idea, but did create societal imbalances that lead to unhealthy patterns. A system to punish and provide aid to drug users and dealers is a good idea and should be worked out.

  1. I agree that not all drug users and dealers are bad people, however in our society we have created this reputation that they are. I also agree that there should be a new, better system in place to deal with drug crimes.

  2. I agree because sometimes people who get arrested with drugs get crazy sentences in jail while people who have done worse don't get the fair sentence. Like you said, there should be a system to punish those who broke the law for drugs and get them help.

  3. Earlier this year I did a research project on the War on Drugs in another class, and I came to the conclusion that the War on Drugs was pure with its intent however it was corrupt in its methods. From 2001-2013, more than half of all federal prisoners in the United States serving sentences of one or more years were because of drug offenses. It's a little ridiculous that so many people have been put in jail for as much as having possession of drugs as common as marijuana.

  5. I agree that there should be another way to do it. During the War on Drugs, people were being put away for years. In the Documentary that we watched we saw the story of that man that happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Although he himself didn't have drugs, he was put into jail for many years.

  6. I agree that the War on Drugs was necessary and I believe its goals were good hearted, however the way it was actually conducted was rather dramatic and it feels as though they were only scratching the surface of the issue.

  7. I think that the War on Drug would benefit the society if they had handled it in a better way. I think that if the police was more open-minded and would not only target specific groups, it would be much more effective. I agree that people who take drugs should be responsible for it and should receive certain punishments but the War on Drug seemed to be imposing a rather severe punishment then what drug dealers should deserve.

  8. I think it is strange that the majority of drug users in the US were white, but the police seemed to target minorities. I believe the war on drugs was necessary, but should have extended to all of America, not just poor comunities.
