Reagan and Gorbachev

With the Cold War reaching back up to a peak in tension it was safe to assume that the American and Soviet citizens were beginning to look for a way to end the war and restore peace. One thing that greatly influence the turning of the war and the beginning of the end of it was the fact that two new leaders were newly introduced to the two nations: Reagan newly elected into office in the US and Gorbachev newly coming to power in Russia. The two leaders met in the 1985 Geneva summit to discuss more limitations on nuclear arms and to talk about scrapping the newly introduced SDI idea that America had. The two seemed to get along in a civil manner, seen joking and smiling together, and seeing the way their leaders were interacting is something that I believe really helped the citizens of the US and Soviet Union to begin to realize that the Cold War needed to end.

  1. The SDI project is what seemed to cause the US and USSR to fail to make an agreement. Should Reagan have sacrificed the project in order to find peace?

  2. I completely agree with Nate that this project further increased the failure of agreement between the US and USSR and wonder why Reagan still went with it.

  3. Let me prepose an idea here, what if we could construct such a devise. Do you think that it would ruin relations and the current balance between the US and Russia?

  4. I think that Evelyn has a point, an important factor for which the US and the Soviet Union got along during that period of time was by the fact that both countries had new leader/president.

  5. I agree in that seeing Gorbachev and Reagan get along was a big step in trying to find peace, however the SDI project hurt the US and USSR's relationship and I think Reagan should have done a lot more to fix their countries' relationship and disputes.

  6. I believe that if Reagan gave up the SDI project, the US and USSR could have gotten along better. If there was such technology to build it, the tension would rise and the Soviet Union would feel threatened. That tension and fear could grow to a third world war.
