Nixon's Resignation
Today in class we continued our "Detente" worksheet, we also finished watching a video which involved with President Nixon resigning from his Presidency only because he was accused of stealing something having to do with the Watergate scandal. With the Watergate scandal it cost a lot of controversy between Nixon and the country, causing Nixon to loose most of his political support, later leading to his resignation on August 9, 1974. When the Soviet Union heard about this scandal they were surprised because of the fact that stealing between the Soviets was a normal act, and finding out that just because of a minor "rumor" America had gotten rid of their President seemed kind of silly t them. After Nixon resigned, Vice President Gerald Rudolph Ford took over the office.

I think that it was a good idea that Nixon resigned because he knew he had done something wrong. I think that it if he would have came clean since the beginning, then we wouldn't have had to resign and people would have forgiven his mistake
ReplyDeleteI believe that Nixon was involved within the Watergate Scandal, espeically with the amount of tapes that he was hiding and blocking out from the evidence. Nixon and many others could have been charged with obstruction of evidence and numerous other tasks, but he wasn't charged of any of those. Nixon resigning was a good idea however, because he didn't want to be impeeched or removed from presidency, so he left on his own terms. Stealing may be ok within the Soviet Government, but America's legal and justice system applies to all people, president, citizen, police officer, attorney, everyone has the same rights, no matter the social or political standing, which was why NIxon was forced to "retire" from office.
ReplyDeleteNixon did a good thing by resigning before making things way worse and getting impeached, however I believe he should have told the truth sooner. I think the consequence would not have been resignation or impeachment. If he gave Congress what they wanted, he could have had the opportunity to redeem himself and get a second chance. Even if he was impeached, he at least would have upheld his promise he took when he was sworn in to office. He would have remained an honest and trustworthy person who was able to admit what he did was wrong and unjust.
ReplyDeleteEven though Nixon did this, he was one of the better presidents we have had. He got us out of Vietnam and improved relations. We needed a president like this at the time and it's a shame that watergate ruined his reputation. He didn't even need to cheat during the election because he most likely would have won anyways.
