What do you guys think about gender inequality.

According to the presentation on Tuesday, women are paid less than men in general. Does it have to do with the job itself? For instance if both men and women work in a day care centre, men has to put more work force than women because they usually work as maintenance and they are the ones who carry heavy objects around. However, the women's job at a day care centre is just to do some clean up and take care of the children so if they were to be paid less, it is totally reasonable because they contributed less than the men. Also, now there are many female ceos and many professional positions were also taken up by female. Do you guys think that women are paid less because of their gender or it is because of the job itself?

  1. I would say in some cases they do get paid less because of their gender. Especially if they do the same job as a man. But I also heard that women often don't get bonuses or promotions because in general they are afraid to speak up. This could be part of the reason, but it is also just partially because women are thought of as inferior to men.

  2. I feel that it all depends on what job both genders are doing. But we have to take into account that women need to take personal time off whether its taking care of their children or even during pregnancy. In the future, women could be forced towards career choices that might not be to their liking thus possible discriminating them.

  3. I believe in most cases men and women are paid differently, because of gender. However Mr. Stewart's point about female athletes being paid less mainly because there sports do not get nearly as much popularity, brought up an interesting point that I feel could be applied to other job fields, and could explain why women are generally paid less.

  4. I think that gender economic equality is a tough subject to tackle. First of all, there are so many more factors that come into play other than gender alone. Such as type of job, job position, race, and area. But I firmly believe that if two people (one male and one female) are doing the exact same job, they should both be payed equally. I think that some of the issues of non-equality in payment come from people failing to recognize the differences between the two gender's jobs, and jumping straight to "they should be payed equally for have the same titled job"

  5. Gender equality is a largely debated topic. Men are differently valued than women in society. If you look closely you can spot the differences. Men may make slightly more then women for the same job, perhaps there is a reason. Not saying that men would do the job any better but maybe the extra pay is a surcharge. A surcharge could possibly be added to the mans salary because, if there is a fire he is the last one that the firemen take out, if the ship is sinking the women go on the life boat, the man gets up to see what the bump in the night was. Now I am not saying that is why men get paid more and I am not complaining about any of the standard male duties, but I do think that this is a new way of looking at the topic.

  6. Gender equality is in fact not fair for women vs men. It is a fact that men get paid 30% more for the same job and degree of education. Based on the reviews of Edgar's parents who both conduct the same job, I believe there is a huge inbalance in America, and the fact is, it won't change unless we get both parties represented in this argument. Women are commonly viewed as weaker in American society, which is a huge misconception. Women have a brain for themselves, and the same, if not stronger mental capabilities, because woman have been putting up with all this unequal gender roles crap for so many years. While female atheletes may deserve to be paid less, the fact that their sports don't generate as much money is because they are not televised. Yet alone more gender bias. Women are strong, maybe stronger than we appear on the outside, and have the capabilities to do the same job men do equally well, if not better, given the chance.

  7. Many critics seem to believe that pay differences between both men and women are simply a matter of personal choices (ex: women deciding to take time off to raise children), however after conducting enough research, I have learned that research studies have proven otherwise. The AAUW (American Association of University Women) addressed this argument in a study that analyzed earnings data for female and male college graduates 1 year and 10 years after college graduation. They actually found that one year after graduating, women earned only 80 % of what their male counterparts made. Ten years after graduation, women were only earning even less-69% of what men made, despite taking a small period of time to devote themselves to raising their children.
