On Wednesday, we briefly went over the Bill of Rights. They are all very important but the first five are interesting, which one do you guys think is the most important of the first five?
First Amendment:
- Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petitition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Second Amendment:
- A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
Third Amendment:
- No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner; nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.
Fourth Amendment:
- The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
Fifth Amendment:
- No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself; nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use without just compensation.
I think the 1st amendment is a important one because it really gives people the freedom to do what they want. The other amendments seem to be made to protect the people more than to give them freedom, but the 1st amendment is what gives people the freedom to choose and express what they believe.
ReplyDeleteI think the 4th amendment is the most important because it makes sure that the people's rights are protected and provides a check on the executive branch of government. It checks this branch because it limits the freedom they have to interfere with the people
ReplyDeleteI think that all the amendments are very important because they protect different things for everyone. But I think that the most important one is the first amendment because it gives you the freedom to express yourself however you want.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Anna, the freedom to express oneself is extremely important, especially in society today. Would we see more crime or corruption if we weren't allowed to express ourselves freely?
ReplyDeleteI would agree with Sarah, the Fourth Amendment was originally established as a limit on the power of the government and its agents in law enforcement to intrude on the private property and person without probable cause or judicial oversight . I respect this amendment because it consistently forces the government to follow a clear standard when it comes to an individual's privacy and the idea that privacy is paramount until reasonable suspicion is to suggest that one is guilty has been shown.
